Last week in my writing, I essentially explained that the biggest reason for me to have to write in my field would be to describe my design process. One of the most common misunderstandings that people have when it comes to commissioned artwork is why the price is set how it is, because they don’t truly know the level of work and resources that are put into it.
Stella Lincoln made an excellent point in her article "Highlighting the Importance of Writing for a Designer", saying "writing skills for a designer not only help him with literature but also helps improve as a designer." But another important point that they made was about how writing is especially crucial to networking. One of them mentions blogs, and how effective they can be in spreading word of your work and attracting clients to come to you, instead of having to seek them out. The articles also mention how writing is crucial for communicating with your clients, to figure out what exactly they’re thinking and how you can produce that idea for them. Reading these articles has also really honed in on the fact that being able to write and clearly communicate your ideas facilitates the creative process. It can truly be a hindrance when neither parties, client or creator, can fully communicate their thinking into words. It also helps the designer to be able to put their vision into words before it is physically executed or to explain the intentions behind it.
Another aspect mentioned was how writing for yourself can clear your mind and help you come up with better ideas. I had never considered doing this before an artistic or creative endeavor. However, this makes sense because I tend to do this when I have a paper to write and I want to organize all of my ideas.
